POLTEAGEIST – Philippines’ Piracy of Leaked Titles: Examining Activities and Gathering Insights on Entertainment and Software Torrent Trends among Young Adults
The Philippines continues to persist as a target for various Cyber-related crimes and threats, with continued gullibility of the population and inactivity of the government and various parties in cooperating towards implementing and propagating good Cybersecurity practices and awareness. This is apparent from the various recent incidences of data leaks and the tolerant behaviors of Filipinos on threats. Piracy is an illegal act conducted by multiple Internet users to gain unlicensed free access to a certain digital product, this is commonly done due to its convenience and the need for paid software. Using torrent files is a popular method of piracy, it is widely accessible through various websites and directories. A lot of torrents come with malicious code; however, Filipinos and other neighboring populations continues to use such with a relatively high risk-tolerance regarding its illegality and potential compromise of their systems. Various studies explored torrents and the surface of the awareness of Filipinos on the various Cyber-threats including those tied with piracy, however, there is an opportunity to delve deeper on the behaviors specific to the use of torrents. This study intends to explore this through the statistical analysis of the findings extracted from a survey that profiles the awareness and Cybersecurity knowledge of Filipino respondents, the results will be used to form the theory that implies its applicability to the wider population.
