Smart Parking Management System Using IoT
Considering the continuous population growth and the expansion of cities and with the increase in the number of cars and drivers, the organization and availability of car parks have become one of the most critical aspects of cities, which reflects a positive impression of the extent of the culture and urbanization of society. Colleges’ parking in universities, like other parking, suffers from many problems, such as overcrowding which leads to several problems, such as traffic, wasting students’ and employees’ time, and being late for appointments and lectures, additionally, parking the car in the shade is challenging due to the lack of umbrellas, leaving the car for long hours under direct sunlight, rain, and dust that may damage the vehicle in the long term. These problems were exacerbated after women were allowed to drive in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the number of vehicles increased. This research aims to develop a smart parking management system using the Internet of Things (IoT) techniques to find practical solutions to reduce the traffic and air pollution resulting from the increased number of cars. A system includes a screen that shows the map of the parking to the driver and displays the nearest spot by pressing the button that is beside the screen and infrared sensors for detecting the presence and the absence of the car to be updated in the database. Also, a real-time database was designed using a Firebase platform, providing the status of the parking spot. The suggested system is anticipated to reduce the time and effort spent looking for the ideal location.
